With Scotland set to vote on independence in less than 10 months; we look briefly at what would happen and my personal opinion on the matter.
Well, it’s an odd question, one you’d not usually ask yourself if you’re not Scottish, right? You’d probably assume if you aren’t Scottish or live in Scotland; whether Scotland’s in the UK or not won’t change the price of milk in your neighbourhood [so to speak]. You may even be forgiven into believing that if Scotland roams free, unshackled by the chains of high taxes and arbitrary policy making, that everywhere else in the UK will remain as the status quo.
(This is the part where I tell you you’re wrong.) You’re wrong. Shame on you. For years, decades even; Scotland has been cuffed by the UK’s hefty arms and hardly been able to breathe. You see, The Scots, in their nature (and rightly so may I add) lean to the left of politics. Not slightly either it seems, as the Conservatives have managed to obtain one lonely seat, the rest going to lefties and a one less than a dozen going Liberal. Scotland is actually where Labour obtain many of their seats (almost one fifth!). So, thinking logically if Labour loses all of the seats in Scotland because of the Scots going independent… What happens to us? We go Conservative, forever.
Well probably not forever that’s probably figuratively, a lie. However, it will make it very much harder to lean left. Now, if you’re a rightist (yes, rightist) you may be thinking well why doesn’t Cameron campaign and speak out, propagate how well it would be if Scotland did go independent? Re-election maybe! Without the puppy dog Cleggy lapping on his crotch! Nun, mein freunde, its not as simple as such. Mr Cameron is pussy-footing, taking a backseat and biting his nails on at once.
Scotland has oil. Scotland has resources, Scotland has free tuition, Scotland pay more taxes than England. Scotland go independent? We pay more taxes, they pay less. Scotland is the only lot that know how to fiscal austerity bloomin’ works. If Cameron steps foot into the political arena against Alex Salmond, he’ll quite simply self-destruct. The Scots are lefties, the last thing they need is some posh, Eton piglet-faced Tory telling them what to do. Intelligence from Cameron it seems.
The right wing media, however can/have put in their ten-piece. ‘Scotland will ruin their economy,’ ‘Scottish people at risk by SNP’ ‘Scotland to lose UK’s security,’ ‘Damaging foreign bankers.’ ‘Lose the pound’. These scare-tactics aren’t new by the media. 2011 AV referendum, the UK citizens’ effectively swindled into a choice by lies and campaigns from the big tyrannical parties. Scare-mungering is what it is, Labour too, fearful of their tribulations ahead fall into the same category. Scare-mungers; Labour’s ugly-juggernauts speaking against independence; Alastair Campbell, Alistair Darling and Tony Blair (as well as many many others) speaking out.
I’ve tried to keep this as brief as possible as if I didn’t, I’d be here for a few days and you (uninterested) a few seconds. So, to independence; Anything benefitting a nation to become sovereign is a plus. Empowerment, giving the people what they want without lies, with all the flaws that come with it. Also, I’ve come to know, anything the main parties oppose, is worth researching. We will live through this Conservative dominated government if needs be for the fellow Scots.
To whether Scotland goes independent or not; I believe even against the torrent of heavily financed anti-independent campaigns; the Scots will choose sovereignty.
