The most swindling, bamboozling, arbitrary and uninteresting awards ceremony has commenced for another year on the weekend and do you know, there’s more controversy.
Kanye West and Frank Ocean skipped the ceremony this year, both suggesting racial discrimination. Frank Ocean didn’t even submit his ‘Blonde’ album, citing the Grammys did not “seem to be representing very well for people who come from where I come from, and hold down what I hold down”.
Twenty One Pilots took off their pants when receiving their award for “Stressed Out”, something that isn’t particularly unique or interesting anymore amongst white pop groups. Please, don’t misinterpret what I’m saying; I enjoy white pop groups, but trashy played out sampling and grumpy pseudo emotional lyrics get boring after the 5,621st band does it.
Originality? None, another year of racial controversy. Another year of boring dwindling cliches win, where whoever sells more, simply wins. So its no surprise that Adele, the British bombshell sweeps up again. Yep, The Oscars remains as culturally diverse as a KKK rally, so why should The Grammy Awards be any different. The pitiful Sunday ceremony however received aggressive media stick as they snubbed Beyoncé’s Lemonade, widely regarded as one the most empowering, liberating and pre-emptive classic works of art released this year, something Adele, who won the award instead, had noted.
“I can’t possibly accept this award”. Adele claimed. “I’m very humbled and I’m very grateful, but Beyonce is the artist of my life”. However, once one really ponders two factors, we note that Adele’s gracious notoriety was not really her choice. Consider the first factor, everyone in that audience, everyone watching at home knew Beyonce deserved that award, so for Adele to ignore that simple fact would of been seen as obnoxious and career threatening. Noting Beyonce’s effort this year was necessary because everyone knew it, and everyone knew Adele knew it. The second factor is perhaps much simpler, Adele, herself knew that Beyonce was owed that Grammy, owed that recognition, so if The Grammy’s didn’t want to note that, she would.
As touching as it seems, there’s still the underlying issue of how year after year, time after time Beyonce, amongst other black artists are swindled. The award for ‘Album of The Year’ has been given to 10 black artists from the conception of The Grammy Awards; 10. Black entertainers and musician dominate the global stage, and a simple truism that award ceremonies, fixed in their dogmatic ways cannot comprehend, will not comprehend, or what I believe is that they do not want to comprehend.
Beyonce doesn’t need the award, she has enough trophies to melt down and finance a country. That isn’t the point however; Beyonce, arguably one the biggest female entertainers for over a decade and maybe two, has never won Album of the Year, what? That’s an astounding opinion on ‘independent’ music ‘critics’. Theres nothing critical here except if its on discriminatory grounds.
Kanye West, Mariah Carey and Prince, amongst the biggest names in entertainment let alone music have never won the honour, but Taylor Swift has won two? What?
Lets not become critical of Taylor Swift, or Adele, as in their own right they are spectacular artists, pushing music to new boundaries. However, this doesn’t negate the issue that there is clear divide of priorities, which is not founded on music.
We all know when Beyonce was snubbed for Taylor Swift and Kanye West went ballistic, but what about 2013, 2014, 2015 etc.
In 2013, Mumfords and Son beat Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange, notably one of the best albums in history.
In 2014 Daft Punk beat Kanye West Yeezus. West Claimed “Yeezus is the top one or two album on every single list,” he said at US Airways Center, according to an Instagram video captured by radio station KISS-FM. “But only gets two nominations from the Grammys. What are they trying to say?”
In 2015 Beck was chosen over Beyonce, a surprise in that Beck was surprised, and went up on stage like a cautious dear in a park.
In 2016 Taylor was again chosen over Kendrick Lamar’s, and Frank Ocean blasted the decision “1989 getting album of the year over To Pimp A Butterfly. Hands down one of the most ‘faulty’ TV moments I’ve seen.”
To the ten black artists that have won it, would of cost The Grammy Awards their reputation (what is left of it) if they weren’t winners. Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Outcast and other historical figures. But Marvin Gaye? Nope. Rihanna? Nope. Usher? Nope.Mary J Blige? Nope. Tupac? Nope. Jay Z? Nope. The last black artist to win the Album of the Year was near 10 years ago. Kanye West is the only rapper to win best album over a white artist. That probably explains why he is so angry at the Grammys.
